Getty Research Journal, No. 7

The Getty Research Journal features the work of established and emerging art historians, museum curators, and conservators around the world as part of the Gettys mission to promote critical thinking in the presentation, conservation, and interpretation of the worlds artistic legacy. Articles present original research related to the Gettys collections, initiatives, and research projects. Shorter texts highlight acquisitions and tools for scholarship under development at the Getty.

This issue features essays on prints from the childhood of Louis XIV; material culture in colonial Brazil; the interaction of painting with early photography in Mughal India; commercial photography in interwar Germany; Pierre Koenigs Case Study House 21; and four essays examining how expectations in the early days of photography shaped its future. Two essays detail recently developed tools of scholarship: a web-based project on the drawings of lie-Honor Montagny and a study of mystery rites on the island of Samothrace informed by GIS technology. Shorter texts include notices on study photographs of Italian paintings, an illuminated manuscript owned by Thomas Becket, the archive of Angelica Kauffmann, drawings by Solomon Cesar Malan, marginalia in books owned by Heinrich Wlfflin, a sketchbook by Diego Rivera, photographs in Cold Warera Hungary, and notes for an unrealized exhibition by Harald Szeemann.
