TheGetty Research Journalpresents peer-reviewed articles on the visual arts of all cultures, regions, and time periods. Topics relate to Getty collections, initiatives, and broad research interests. The journal welcomes a diversity of perspectives and methodological approaches, and seeks to include work that expands narratives on global culture.

This issue features essays on a stippled ceramic Aegean Bronze Age jar and the ancient imitation of ostrich-eggshell vessels; crucifixes by German sculptor Veit Stoss in the years around 1500; images of Nahua women at war in early colonial Mexico; photographer Edward S. Curtiss landmark 1914 film starring Kwakwakawakw people; Russian artist El Lissitzkys biocentric theories in the early 1920s and his book project “1=1”; the role of archaeology and fragments in the work of Italian architect Aldo Rossi; an English translation of Aldo Rossis handwritten autobiographical note from 1971; and contemporary photographer Michael Lights images of the Great Basin. Shorter texts include notices on the role of Parisian gallery Tedesco Frres in the commercial success of nineteenth-century French painter Rosa Bonheur; and the translation of the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus and the retrieval of art information in Portuguese-speaking countries.
